奥利弗因为要粥的事情被关了一个多礼拜禁闭。在这段时间里，他只有每天早晨出来沐浴一番，同时还得遭到邦布尔先生的藤条抽打。有时候还会被带到众多的孩子面前被鞭笞，以便起到杀鸡儆猴的效用。等到大家祈祷的时候，他会再次被推到黑屋子中。理事们已经贴出谁愿意招奥利弗学手艺的话，会得到五镑现金。
