Frankenstein，中文译名为《弗兰肯斯坦》，也译《科学怪人》，由英国著名作家玛丽·雪莱编著。主人公弗兰肯斯坦是位从事生命科学研究的青年学者，他希望用人工的方法创造生命。经过无数次的实验，他终于利用人的骨骼和动物的器官造出了一个智慧生命~一个巨人。除长相狰狞、体形巨大之外，巨人与普通人相差无几，他也有喜怒哀乐、七情六欲。由于对巨人的丑陋有厌恶感，巨人一有生命就被弗兰肯斯坦抛弃了。巨人到处流浪，起初他对人充满了善意和感恩之情。由于其无比丑陋的外貌，人们把他看成怪物，没人愿意与他交朋友。盛怒之下，巨人决定报复弗兰肯斯坦，他认为弗兰肯斯坦既然给了他生命就不应该将他抛弃。他先杀死了弗兰肯斯坦的弟弟，却嫁祸于他人。作为不再报复的条件，他请求弗兰肯斯坦为他造出一个配偶。在遭到拒绝后，他杀死了弗兰肯斯坦的朋友，然后又在弗兰肯斯坦的新婚之夜杀死了他的妻子伊丽莎白。弗兰肯斯坦怀着满腔怒火追捕怪物巨人。最终弗兰肯斯坦心力交瘁死在复仇的路上，而怪物巨人也因悔恨自己的所作所为而准血自杀身亡。
该书一经出版，很快就成为当时最受关注和最畅销的小说，至今已被译成几十种文字，并曾经先后多次被改编成电影、电视和电脑游戏等。书中所展现的科幻故事伴随了一代又一代人的美丽童年、少年直至成年。无论作为语言学习的课本，还是作为通俗的文学读本，《弗兰肯斯坦》对当代中国的青少年都将产生积极的影响。为了使读者能够了解英文故事概况，进而提高阅读速度和阅读水平，在每章的开始部分增加了中文导读。

她于1797年8月30日生于伦敦的一个声望显赫的家庭，父亲威廉·戈德温是英国著名哲学家、小说家，母亲玛莉·渥斯顿克雷福特是英国著名女权主义者、教育家和作家。玛丽·雪莱是英国十九世纪上半叶著名的浪漫主义派诗人波西·比希·雪莱(Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1792~1822)的第二任妻子。

'The words induced me to turn towards myself. I learned that the possessions most esteemed by your fellow creatures were, high and unsullied descent united with riches. A man might be respected with only one of these advantages; but without either he was considered, except in very rare instances, as a vagabond and a slave, doomed to waste his powers for the profits of the chosen few！ And what was I？ Of my creation and creator I was absolutely ignorant, but I knew that I possessed no money, no friends, no kind of property. I was, besides, endued with a figure hideously deformed and loathsome; I was not even of the same nature as man. I admired virtue and good feelings and loved the gentle manners and amiable qualifies of my cottagers, but I was shut out from intercourse with them, except through means which I obtained by stealth, when I was unseen and unknown, and which rather increased than satisfied the desire I had of becoming one among my fellows. The gentle words of Agatha and the animated smiles of the charming Arabian, were not for me.
